I'm giving it 4 stars because it kept me entertained and made me stay up very late reading it. It's engrossing and you have to keep reading to see what happens to the characters. But there comes a point, even while reading, that you are thinking "rape, again? Really? Oh, it's even more brutal this time. Got it!" This book is stronger than Wizard's First Rule. I really go back and forth with this series from thinking that it's terrible and I should stop reading it, to being totally involved. The ratio of thinking I should stop reading it to loving it in this book was weighted very heavily to the love side, however, this time. I did find the ending a little to 'happily ever after' but knew it would only be temporary and more harm would come to everyone in the next book. I can sense, though, that this pat ...more

All in all, I really liked this book. I found the carefully woven subplots to be well crafted, the characters believable and flawed, and the story was engaging. So why only three stars? The endless, boring, repetitive middle chunk. A good 300 pages, maybe more, could be rendered from this book leaving nothing but the fabulous story. The ending was wonderful, appropriate without being sappy, and the last few hundred pages are so well done it's difficult to put the book down. My advice is to eithe ...more

If I were to combine everything that I like in a good book, I realized that Terry Goodkind's books are basically comprised of all of that: romance, intrigue, action, philosophy, huggable animals...which is why his Sword of Truth series will be read and re-read for a long, long time... ...more
