A fun, quick read in an interesting fantasy take on European folk/fairy tales. Ella Enchanted starts, as many fairy tales do, with a spell cast on an infant. In this case, the spell is cast by a well-meaning but completely clueless fairy, who "blesses" the baby girl with Obedience: she must obey any command given her. I love this retelling of the Cinderella story! Ella is an independent and capable young woman who does not need the prince to save her, in fact, she saves the prince a few times. While the parallells to the Disney version of Cinderella are evident, it is Ella's intelligence and strong will that eventually break the curse of obedience that was placed on her as a child and saves the kingdom! I think this is my favorite spin on a fairy tale ever. I had almost as much fun spending time with Ella and Char as they did with each other. I'm glad I ignored my dislike of the movie trailer and listened to all of the good recommendations. ...more

This was a pretty fresh take on the Cinderella story; the twist is that the inherently strong-willed (Cinder)Ella was "gifted" with obedience by a fairy at birth - if someone orders her to chop off her own head, she has to do it. This led to disastrous results at finishing school, where an evil classmate caught on, and if this section makes you think you might have to put the book down just hang on until she's out of that situation and hanging with elves and other mythical creatures.
