The Faery Handbag: A creative, interesting story about a unique piece of luggage with a mind (and maybe an appetite) of its own. 3.0 stars

I'll have to read this again sometime, because I was kind of 'eh' about it. Bummer. I really thought I'd like it. I guess I like when stories balance out the weird and the ordinary, like they converge and depend on each other. When it's a bunch of meandering weird? not so much.

I'd read The Faery Handbag and ... uh... the one about the dead girlfriend... I think that's all... in other collections. I read the one about the TV show, also, and then I started one other (can't remember which) before

Pretty Monsters Stories is the first young adult collection from Kelly Link. I had never read anything by her before this collection, but Neil Gaiman mentioned her on his blog and it piqued my interest. I picked up the book to leaf through in a book store and thought it looked like a lot of fun from the few sentences I read.

I'm really glad someone turned me on to Kelly Link. She's a gifted storyteller whose work is often pegged as fantasy or light horror (I say "light" because I could never stomach real horror), but in fact runs the gamut from science fiction to fairy tale to some really interesting magical realism with dizzying meta-fictional elements.
