I really love Carey’s prose - it should be ridiculous, with all the mayhaps and betimes and anons, but it works for me. I also love her slow pacing; this book practically has live-action sleeping, but again, it seems to work. My favorite part was actually first third or so, where nothing happens except Imriel simply growing up, from about age 14-18.

For those of you who have read the first 3 books in this series (Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen, and Kushiel's Avatar), you'll know it's written from the heroine's point of view: Phedre. Kushiel's Scion starts the second phase of this series and is written from the point of view of Phedre's foster-son, Imriel. I read the first 3 novels by themselves at least twice (maybe more), so I was very comfortable & happy living inside Phedre's head, so to speak...

If you've read the previous Kushiel's trilogy, then you know exactly what you're in for. Phèdre's foster son, Imriel, is the new protagonist in this deliciously over-the-top sexual Utopian fantasy. He doesn't go as far in his S as Phèdre has gone in her M, but give it two more books... (July 24, 2006)
