This is a series that constantly surprises me. The writing is consistently lush and evocative, the characters are multi-faceted, and Carey seems to have considerable knowledge of world cultures. While the first trilogy, in which the courtesan Phedre no Delaunay stars, will always hold a special place in my heart, Imriel's adventures are growing on me, particularly as he faces the fact that to some, he will always be the son of traitors, no matter what he himself does. I enjoyed this return to the world set up in the Kushiel series, and the alternate viewpoint presented by Imriel, Phedre's foster son, is interesting. He's a strong character whom I actually liked a bit better than Phedre, especially in the second book where Phedre wasn't as strong a presence. A word of caution - don't read the Amazon listing for Kushiel's Justice, as there is a HUGE spoiler in the book description. Jacqueline Carey is amazing... this book was so rich and satisfying that I'm compelled to read the series (for the 3rd time) from the beginning just so I can share the journey again and again.
