The story of the Wicked Witch of the West from her POV. Been looking forward to reading this for a long time. Was not quite what I expected but I really enjoyed it. The thing is, it is not a fast read (and I am not sure why not).

Elphaba was destined for a hard life from the time she was born. Being green with scary teeth sure did not make it easy for her mother to love her.

The first two parts of this book captivated me. I loved the way that Maguire fleshed out the land of Oz with all it's various peoples, and although some people may have found it boring, I could hardly put the book down. One friend highly recomended this book and another hated it. So reading it myself I wasn't sure what to think of it. I loved the play so much, the book was a bit of a disapointment. I had a very hard time with the way she treated her son with such indifference. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't one of the best books I have ever read. It was disturbing and made me think. I think I would of liked it better if I was more in the mood to be disturbed. ...more

After all the hype I'd heard about this book, I have to admit that I was a bit let down when I finished it. Much darker than I'd expected, the book is a thick read. But I love the retelling of the Wicked Witch story, and all of the characters and intrigue. I'd recommend the book to pretty much everyone except young kids--there's violence, and a bit of sexual content. ...more

Pure garbage. I know people think of this as a brilliant revisionist look at the world of OZ, but much like the Sci-Fi channels recent Tin Man miniseries fiasco, stay away from this one.

Another waste of time. Either read the actual Oz books or A Barnstormer in Oz.
