I liked this one much better than the first one. Gemma was more mature, and that helped. Also, the friendship between the girls felt more genuine, which made me more invested. I did see through one of the big twists, which was pretty shocking considering how bad I am at that game, but still, I quite enjoyed the entire experience of this book.

The second book of the Gemma Doyle trilogy deepens the mystery of the Realms and takes our heroine away from the confines of Spence Academy and into London society. Gemma's relationship with the enigmatic Kartik becomes more complicated, while a romantic rival presents himself in the person of handsome Simon Middleton. Sometimes these girls get on my nerves, but the books are definitely engaging. I couldn't put it down, and now I've picked up the last one.

I'm glad I was able to listen to this audiobook. It dragged quite a bit in the middle, but redeemed itself at the end, which was lovely and beautifully written. A nice mix of fantasy and historical fiction (my two loves).
