Having written this (and having had it actually turn into a longer review), I should warn you-- this contains spoilers! Even if not very explicit ones.
Wish I had time to write a longer review-- I'm giving it 5 stars, though I didn't always feel like it was worth that-- but I really really like how different the story is and how Donaldson is trying to do something unique in the field of space opera.

Short novel, probably would be a novella, if not for the fact that it's a part of a four book series... The Gap series.
This first book is a difficult read because of the brutality and repeated rape that occurs against our heroine/victim, Morn Hyland. She's the daughter in a family of space faring police. They have the misfortune to run across our villain, Angus Thermopyle, who is about the most despicable, yet interesting, characters that I've read. Angus is driven by fear and instinct. Another favorite series of mine, the first of the series doesn't have nearly the depth of most Donaldson I've read, but once you get into the rest of the series, you find that he goes to great lengths to show you some of the ugliest aspects of humanity, and somehow at the same time, exposes you to the best.
