Excellent sci fi opera but I have to knock it down a star for an over-riding problem I had with the entire series. I don't get why everyone turns their world upside down, going against their established character and all common sense for Morn Hyland (the abused, heroine). We're told several times that she's "beautiful," but that doesn't explain self-serving sociopaths who do 180s and backflips to do as she commands. That's the redemption arc for Angus, the rapist-pirate, and I suppose I buy that

I dislike this work of scifi. I find it repugant. Too bad since his Thomas Covenant series is among my favorite books of all time. That said, this book is charged with despair, anguish, and triumph. Sadly I just cannot connect with it or make myself really care for any of the characters. This book is happily on its way back to the thrift store.
