I plan on giving all of my Karin Fossum reviews the same statement because I don't even want the hint of a spoiler on this woman's fantastic work. Fossum's writing gave me my love of Scandanavian mystery writers and I seek those writings out. Hands down, though, Fossum's work is the best I have come across so far.

The author continues to explore the darker side of seemingly normal people here. While the writing isn't bad I felt that she had tread a lot of this ground in 'the Indian Bride' and especially 'When the Devil Holds the Candle'. And both those books were more compelling.

The only thing that saved this book for me a little bit was Karin Fossum's writing style. I figured out who did it and how about page 20 and the plot twist was exactly what I thought it would be as it unfolded. As I finished this book I had the feeling I've read this plot before somewhere. Not Inspector Sejer's best book.

It was a very decent read. I enjoyed it though I did struggle a bit at the beginning with her way of writing, formulating sentences - or maybe rather with the translation. Nevertheless, I found it satisfactory even though it was pretty obviuos from the beginning what it was all about. Yet, I can say that I will consider trying out some other of her books.

I definitely liked this book, yet not as much as The Indian Bride or He Who Fears the Wolf, even though I gave them all four stars. (Just can't bring myself to award only three.) It's a good story, moves along well, the ending comes together with the almost agonizingly inevitability that I've come to expect in Fossum's novels. The characters just didn't capture my personal interest as well as in her other books.

I have read 2 other of Karin Fossum's in this series, the first and the 9th, this seems to disagree with other ratings but I didn't feel this was as good, a different translator perhaps? I don't know , I will continue with the others and hope to find them better than Black Seconds, slightly disappointed

Even though I found this case predictable, Fossum is the best at creating real characters and a world one cares about.
