This is one book where my son and I truly differ in opinions. I really did not like this book - at all! I did not find it funny, intriguing, or captivating. I couldn't wait to be done. My 11 year old LOVED this book. He laughed all the way through, love the mischeiviousness of the characters and wants to read more from the series. ...more

R read this book first, and told me I should read it, so I did. I still recall reading this as a kid, and as I started reading it the story line camp back to me. It was a great trip down nostalgia lane. I loved these books as a kid! The only thing I was a bit troubled by was a suicide scene that I wish I hadn't let R read.

I picked this up to read to my son because I had seen it in an NYT list of critics' books that reveal the essence of America to us. It certainly does reveal America. Set in the late 19th century but written in the 1960s, it's funny in all its self-involved, self-aggrandizing, money-grubbing glory. But in this way it's really not a great choice to read to a kid.
