FIRST LINES: At dawn in an outlying district of Warsaw, sunlight swarmed around the trunks of blooming linden trees & crept up the white walls of a 1930s stucco & glass villa where the zoo director & his wife slept in a bed crafted from white birch, a pale wood used in canoes, tongue depressors, & Windsor chairs.

Not just a zoo story but the story of a family that ran the zoo in Warsaw, Poland and how they survived the war. Shows the cohesiveness of the Polish people no matter what their religious beliefs.

I don't think I will ever reread this one, but it certainly whet my appetite to learn more about the Polish underground and resistance during World War II. I enjoyed the animals as well. Added rich imagery to the book. ...more
