I've been delving into the classics of 20th-century crime lately, so it's a natural to turn to Maigret. This one's an interesting amalgam of Golden Age mystery and the rise of noir, filtered through a sensibility that's distinctly French. Overall, I find it successful because the focus is less on the plot's twist but more on Maigret's investigational attitude of watch-and-wait. Crisp, tight, and one I'll be returning to. ...more
