Published in 1928. Exceptionally well written and heart-breaking. I almost enjoyed this one more than the author's next book, Passing although I also loved Passing a lot. The theme of hybridity and unrootedness resonates, and there is no solution. Some quick wikipediaing told me that the novel is largely autobiographical: Larsen, as is her protagonist, had a white Danish mother and a Black American absentee father, and spent some years in Copenhagen. I read Passing back in December and I really liked it. I love Larsen's writing style, and although I think Passing is the better written book, with Quicksand one really gets a look into what a Biracial person goes through, especially if there is no one to guide them. I don't really want to discuss the plot, because I think the book should be approached with fresh eyes/ears.
