I read this for the first time in the third grade. I got into trouble at school because I couldn't hear the teacher for being so engrossed in the story. She actually dragged me from my desk by the ear and pushed me into a corner at the front of the room.
I remember reading under the covers at night with a flashlight and being terrified to go on when I got to the part about Gollum and when they are all captured by the spiders. The goblins and Smaug himself were quite shiver worthy as well! ...more

One of the books listed in "1001 Children's Books" ... and like many books listed in this book, I disagree with the age category, 8 is too young to sit through a long book like this! It would be better listed in the 12+ category.
