Parts of this book are painfully slow, almost confining. I nearly gave up before the halfway point. But, it is well worth pushing through. The story and characters are multidimensional and engaging even when they're not especially likable. The writing is lovely, elegant, unassuming.

This book is written by a Muslim woman about a Muslim girl growing up in the Indianapolis area in the mid-70's. Since I am from Indy, it made it very interesting. I had to keep looking to see if it was a memoir or fiction. The writing got a bit preachy at times and jumped around in time - I was never quite sure if we were in a flashback or present time.
