This is the first of my favorite trilogy from adolescence. The same author as Anne of Green Gables wrote this series. I prefer the Emily books. Emily is an orphan who grows up with grouchy distant relatives. She dreams of becoming an author and gradually falls in love with her dear friend Teddy; in the third book he becomes an illustrator. Years ago I read the Anne of Green Gable series (maybe the first four books). I have always wanted to read the Emily trilogy. Although, I didn't enjoy this first book as much as the first Anne book, I am glad I read it, and plan to read the rest of the trilogy. ...more

It was hard to click with Emily of New Moon even though I related to her character more than Anne of Green Gables. Both girls are orphans, have active imaginations, and get into trouble but always resolve it somehow, but I had heard and read that Emily is darker, sadder, which I was looking forward to reading. Plus Emily seems more introverted and wants to be a writer, like me.

I'm surprised I loved this as much as I did. It grows better and more complex (and a bit odd/jarring/intriguing through some characters) as the book develops. I'll read #2 in the series for sure. ...more
