I came to this book via my kid, who is a big fan of Darnielle's band, The Mountain Goats. So on a recent road trip we popped this on as an audiobook to check out together. It's set in late 1990s Iowa, where a clerk at a video rental store in the waning days of VHS has customers return copies of She's All That and Targets (the setting and juxtaposition of films was enough to hook me) with some kind of strange footage spliced into them.
