Lippman really spins you around in this one.. until you are dizzy enough that you can't figure out who did it, is in the wrong, or the real genius. ...more

They sit outside with sweating tumblers of vodka, swap stories. Polly's are all made up. Maybe Cath's are, too, although they're certainly boring enough to be true. Well-drawn characters and a particularly fascinating protagonist make this slow-burn suspense an incredibly compelling reading for much of its page count, but it's ultimately undone by an unthreatening antagonist with a muddy (frankly, unconvincing) motivation, late plot revelations that feel obvious in contrast to the early, surprising developments, and an ending that conveniently ignores forensic fact [note: tests for gunpowder residue can identify , a shooter]. ...more

Effective, skillful, satisfying.

The book description states, 'One is playing a long game. But which one?' - and all I can think is, yes, this was too long. Nope, don't recommend it. I was a bit bored and not sure I was even going to finish it. But no wait list for it and I was able to check it out again after my audiobook loan from the library expired, so I did finish it. Not memorable to me - recommend to my friends that they skip it. ...more
