My very first graphic novel! I must say that it moved me more than most books I've read recently. David Small's memoir about his bitterly unhappy childhood shows off some astonishing parenting techniques. At the age of 14, he is sent to the hospital where they cut his vocal cords without any explanation from his parents. The reason? Small has cancer of the throat. (Not that they think it necessary to tell him).

Graphic novels do not take long to read. Done in simple pen and ink, Small's understated drawings added to the depth of his story. I read alot, some books are instantly forgetable. Some books, themes, plots, characters simply disappear when the back cover is closed. Not this one. This one will stay.

I read this a few weeks ago and forgot to add it. The book was just okay. I wasn't really taken by the illustrations, and I didn't feel that the story was told as creatively as other graphic novels that I have read.
