As usual, Isabel Allende wrote a very compelling historical fiction, this time is about Spanish Civil War and the migration of its survivors to Chile. I never knew about this history before so it's very interesting to me, to see the aftermath of a war that can change the discourse not only its survivors but also another country altogether.

I'm not sure that this is Allende's best writing, but it's certainly a feat of historical research and imagination. The characters are wonderful, and the relationships between countries and refugees of various 20th century dictatorships are well crafted....and important for our moment. I'll be recommending this book to many people!

I wanted to like this book; the description of it really intrigued me. I had never before read a book that took place in this setting. But the whole book felt like a history lesson. I didn’t feel a real connection to the characters. It was one long description of events... this happened, then this happened, etc, with comparatively little dialogue. I guess I just don’t connect with this writing style. I would rather have had more dialogue between characters, giving me the chance to form an emotio
