Annie Ernaux, a recent Nobel prize-winning author, tells the story of her mother's life. She begins with her mother's death. Ernaux tells her mother's story clinically, from a measured distance, and this is an effective way to write.

Several lines caused me to gasp, to reread, to underline.

When Ernaux goes to the undertaker to choose a coffin, the undertaker tells her, "All our prices include tax."

That little detail.

This novella is my first book by Annie Ernaux and I listened to it on audio (thank you Libby app) which was translated and narrated by Tanya Leslie. I only wish she had a bit of a French accent but c’est la vie.

This is about a woman whose aging mother has Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. And the emotional shock waves and pain were palpable. It cut a little close to home for me and it felt important to hear a personal story (or as many that may appeal to me) during this time in my life.

I thoroughly enjoy Ernaux's work. The Nobel was well-deserved. The two books I've most recently have read deal with the death's of parents. She always manages to hit just the right tone for a truly human touch. ...more
