Whoever knew that Jules Verne could be so funny? I certainly didn't until I read this delightful book. Phileas Fogg is one of the great eccentrics of literature, and this is one of those timeless tales that appeals to both child and adult. The interplay between Fogg and his servant Passpartout is one of the great recurring jests of the novel, as are the many forms of transportation that Fogg & his entourage (for he soon has a damsel-in-distress in tow) are obliged to take. This is an adventure story, a "steam-driven fairy tale" (says James Hynes in the introduction) -- for grownups. And more charming still it is some proof that the so-called straight-laced Victorians liked a good, light-hearted story just like we do. It is a fun story full of unlikely events, mistaken identities, brave risks, and a little romance. My cup of tea. ...more
