Although this book is catalogued as Young Adult in our library, it's one of those books - like the Harry Potter series - that adults can enjoy just as much. You can't help but love plucky orphan Mary who goes to sea as the lowly ship worker "Jacky" in order to escape begging on the streets of London. On board, she - as a he - finds plenty of adventure with pirates, treasure and battles in a gritty, realistic 18th Century setting. This was surprisingly quite good and fun to read, considering that it is written in really 'bad' English and a Liang-Zhu type romance actually takes place on a ship. ...more
