=NOTE= I am reviewing the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, which is beautiful. At Powell's, I had compared the first few pages of the Knopf edition side-by-side with this Penguin edition by Anthony Briggs, which leaves you with a much more blunt, metallic aftertaste, but I am adding this one to my shelf because I only read this novella and not the other stories.

There is so much to talk about with this book. . .and I would rather discuss it in person—

Nothing like Russian literature to get you thinking about pain, death, the significance of life, and sometimes even redemption.
