This was the first Austen novel I read as a teenager and I loved Emma, whom I felt I related to. Now as I approach my 40s I re-read Emma for the first time in at least a decade with some trepidation. While I may like the character of Emma less before she gains some much needed maturity, I am more convinced of Austen's mastery! On this read, I listened to the Audible Originals full cast presentation. Emma Thompson narrated and the cast included Isabella Inchbald and Joanne Froggatt. It was a delightful way of listening to this story.

I know this is blasphemy and all, but ... ready? .... I've never liked Jane Austen. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. I read a few of her books back when I was in college - can't even remember which, the ones that have all the words starting with Ps, and I just didn't love them. But lately there's been such a Jane Austen CRAZE, and I'm so much older and more MATURE now, so I thought perhaps my tastes had changed. As usual, Austen's social satire is incredible fun. I wish I could sit down with her and be snarky for a few hours over tea---I think I would enjoy myself deeply. This novel is distinctly less preachy than certain others (Mansfield Park!); there's a good sense of liveliness and fun, in addition to the snark, and I appreciate her deep sense of goodness as well.
