Satiric masterpiece. It's a critique of war as well as an exceedingly droll account of how one bumbling soldier manages to inevitably bob to the surface no matter what sort of mess he's thrown into. Ostensibly a simpleton, Svejk is actually very clever. There's a Laurel-and-Hardy slapstick character to his escapades which is highly enjoyable.
