Yep, as Kirsti said, thank god for the endnotes, or I wouldn't have understood a good deal of what was funny. I imagine it's a similar experience to someone watching an episode of the "The Colbert Report" 200 years from now.

It was a pleasant satirical read that had me laughing throughout... and who would've thought it was possible to laugh at plague, murder, rape, natural disasters, plundering, autopsies, the Inquisition, slavery, Spanish conquests, and everything else that was taking place in the 1700s. To get the full effect, be prepared to brush up on history and world events of the 18th Century.

Apparently I read this in 2015 as well as in 2019. I have no memory of the first reading. I read this in 2019 for a course in World Literature through EdX/Harvard. It was ok. Very "over the top" satire.
