You might want to skip that ham sandwich while reading this. How can no one notice men falling into giant barrels of pork fat? And then melting there and being transported to the canning section, so that people are actually eating those unfortunates?

So...I know this book is a classic, but the writing isn't so good. Surprisingly, it's much more a commentary on labor rights and issues then it is about sanitation in meat packing. However, everyone knows it for revolutionizing sanitation in canning and meat packing. First of all, the story just gets to the point of being unbelievably dismal, it's hard to believe that much bad can happen to one person. This book is one reason why workplace laws changed after the industrial revolution, and if you read it, you will see how Sinclair's theme carried over to many other injustices that the American worker suffered.
