I know everyone but me looooooooves this book. And I really did*like* it...it just raised a few questions. I mean aside from the very interesting ones I think Fadiman meant it to raise.



Like I said, I liked the book, but it seems to me that Fadiman could have done a bit more to address how her own background leads to bias about a group that she admits she knew little about before beginning her research on this book. This was an amazing read about the clash of cultures surrounding medical treatment. What I was suprised at was the depiction of reluctant immigrants to the U.S. It reminded me of the struggles of those who have immigrated to the U.S. as war refugees, not as those who wish to utilize the advantages of a U.S. education or U.S. jobs. The Hmong are those connected to their heritage, their way of life, and have little desire for things to change from how they've always been. I also really appriciated ...more

I am half way done, and I am loving the book. The clash between two different cultures, and the struggle to do the best for a patient who has epilepsy...very interesting to say the least.


LOL...I finished reading this book like a year ago. It was quite depressing because the whole time, it's a battle between who is right - Westernized/American approach to medicine or cultural Hmong nurture and care? Can't tell you who "wins", but it is a sad story indeed.

I really despised this book. The problem is that the story itself has the potential to be really interesting but it's so dense with medical jargon that it's too hard to get through. ...more

Fadiman uses clear, direct prose to tell a moving tale of modern cultural misunderstanding.
