I was all set to give this four stars if I didn't like the ending. I thought it was going to be an ambiguous ending where you don't know what the true story is, which I think would have been the easy way out. But in fact, the ending snuck up on me. I borrowed this from the library and read it on my IPhone. I thought I had about 100 pages left, but it turned out that they were the questions to the author and for the reader. I was originally skeptical of this book. I expected to be irritated with a white American perspective re-appropriating the North Korean experience in a limited, dimensionless story, but I was really captivated by this book. It captured the uncertainty, culture of fear, pervasive sense of loss, and overwhelming want the author imagines impoverished and unempowered citizens of the DPRK experience in a compelling and deeply moving tale.
