As I began to read this book, I wondered about the vocabulary and sentence structure because it seemed so foreign to me. I finally decided after some pondering that perhaps the author was trying to reproduce what the heroine was thinking as a Swedish immigrant and struggling with writing her story in English. Yes, I liked 'My Antonia' better, but it's not really about the plot as much as the prairie lifestyle and all of the poetic observations on life and connections between people.
