What Members Thought

Very good book. I thought the first couple of chapters were a bit rough in the sense that they were gritty and visceral--which might put off some more squeamish readers--but even though I'm no contemporary music connoisseur, I enjoyed the setting and the cast of characters.
For me, the chapters in Africa and Los Angeles were particularly strong, and I thought that the chapter in Central Park was on the weaker side. It's a story about derailment in a way, trailing the strings of people's lives as ...more

one review of Station Eleven said this book had the same "feel" of intertwining narratives.
People get old, people change, people lose touch with high school friends, people die. That's all true, but it's not as insanely depressing as depicted in this book.
All the mention of punk rock epic got me over excited. I've listened to a fair amount of punk in my life, but I was never a groupie or an insider. I don't feel the punk rock vibe here, so either I'm not enough of a groupie to "get it," or this ...more

This is one of those books with a lot of hype, so much so that I had difficulty locating copies at the NLB. It starts off quite well too, and some of the interconnecting stories are really good, but the more I read, the more I compared it to other examples of such works (well, Cloud Atlas, even if the link is tenuous), and it came off as a little gimmicky. Listening to her interview with Guardian also made me too aware of the deliberation of the whole thing.

I was really feeling in a non-fiction mood all winter and spring but I joined a book club and this was May's pick. I read one chapter and I'm already hooked. Fiction, it's good to be back!
I really liked this story and I think it fits well in our modern world. Time is a goon and we all change as time goes on, we just have to learn from our mistakes. ...more

I really didn't like this book. It is a little confusing because each chapter takes place at a different time and involves different characters. A character that appears in the first chapter may not appear for five more chapters and may be thirty years older. I kind of spaced out my reading of the book and kept forgetting who people were.

Shouldn't have listened to this one- it was way to confusing as an audio book. Might try to reread it down the road.
