To be fair, I only ready 75 pages but I've read a fair amount of T.C. Boyle and could tell right away this was not going to be one his better books. He tends towards polemics but his best books (Drop City, World's End) have nuance.

Emotionally wrenching at a very visceral level, so much so that I often couldn't read more than fifty pages at a stretch. Should be required reading for anyone speaking in public on the immigration debate.

The Series of Unfortunate Events got nothin' on you, Tortilla Curtain. Seriously, devastation after devastation, all intertwined to show the effects of racism, greed, poverty, and hypocrisy. Oh jeez, the hypocrisy. These characters are down on their luck, exaggeratedly so. But Boyle shows that it isn't luck, it is cause and effect. Regardless, there are a few too many scenario's relying on exact timing to make this story plausible, but it was enjoyable and thought-provoking nonetheless.

Wow, can't believe I didn't read this years ago when it first came out. He is a favorite author of mine, and didn't disappoint, this was a page turner, big time. But if you are looking for a solution to all the problems portrayed in this novel, it will disappoint, all he does is lay it out and let you judge for yourself. Compulsive reading and timely subject matter!
