Quick review for now until I can write a full one:

I loved this book. So much so, that I could see myself rereading it. There were a couple things that prevented me from giving it a solid 5 stars.

1) The training of Mariko with the Black Clan felt very rushed. I thought there should have been a bit more training discussed in the book, if she were to truly join them

After reading a couple of Ahdieh's other books, I was really looking forward to this one. There were a few mixed reviews that threw me off at first, but I did not let that deter me. And I am really glad that I didn't.

Aside from the sheer greatness of the story, I find that I really loved the history that was woven throughout. Between learning what a true Samurai must follow, to even the small bits of wisdom and morals that they were all taught from a young age, I really felt completely submerged After reading a couple of Ahdieh's other books, I was really looking forward to this one. There were a few mixed reviews that threw me off at first, but I did not let that deter me. And I am really glad that I didn't.

Aside from the sheer greatness of the story, I find that I really loved the history that was woven throughout. Between learning what a true Samurai must follow, to even the small bits of wisdom and morals that they were all taught from a young age, I really felt completely submerged in this atmosphere and culture. So so so many amazing quotes to be had to look back on and really fall in love with the characters and the story.

That being said, Mariko started off a bit lost, and a bit selfish. Wanting to not appear weak to her family only to go blindly into the unkown of the Jukai Forest to find the Black Clan and hopefully infiltrate their ranks to find out information on her supposed killer. But somewhere along the way her true self shines through all the muck and she really begins to find herself. She is smart and clever and relentless and I really liked that about her. There were times where I wished I could reach out and smack her but for the most part she was a character I could stand behind.

I really really really loved the Black Clan. In a lot of ways they reminded me of Peter Pan's lost boys. They all had a past that they were essentially running from and bound together by an unspoken tether of loyalty. I wished for more from their perspective. Maybe a look into a few of their heists before we get to the big raid on the Hattori homestead. But alas, I still fell for them all just the same.

I was a little confused when it came to the magic aspects of the book. For example how in the work does Okami manage his incredible feats?!! And then there was the strangeness of Kanako, and even in the end we see a little bit of magic from Genmei???!!! Hopefully these will all be explained in book number 2. But until then I'm just rolling with it.

All in all I really really enjoyed this book. Quick from the start to the last page, it never let up. The characters were great and complex. The story was well told and was filled with magic and culture and love. I will be patiently waiting for the next book to be published so I can get my hands on the rest of this story!!!
