The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman was a book that I had been advised to read by a friend who assured me that this was the fairy tale of the year and that as fantasy books go this was one of the best. As my friend purchased this little book for me I thought the least I could do was read it with and open mind.

This children's story for adults is a mishmash of whimsy and horror. It is more a novella than a fully-fledged novel.

Gaiman's Bradburyesque style and tone verge on terseness, but once you get used to the simple delivery, replete with homespun truisms -- and endless descriptions of British cuisine, it seemed, like Gaiman doing a riff on Jamie Oliver -- the magic and terror start to seep in. This is not a children's book. I believe the little boy in the book is used because he is vulnerable, especially to adults. Loved the story! The audio adds to the enjoyment because it is read by the incomparable Neil Gaiman. ...more

I feel genuinely sorry for your life choices, If you haven't read this book, yet.

This book was unique and weird and crazy, it was unlike anything I have read. Neil Gaiman, created a magical world and hid great life lessons in his words in a way that only people who have the power to read between the lines would understand.
