Reread in 2017

I'm not usually into middle-grade, but this is one of my favorite series of all time. It's just so fast and easy to read, really funny, action packed, and full of compelling characters. I love Percy's sassiness and Riordan's interesting take on Greek Mythology in modern world.

I just love Rick's books, he's very good at writing action scenes and humor, and he uses these myths to serve the story in such creative ways.

Rick Riordan has been my favorite author since before I can remember. I first read this when I was nine and have been reading his books ever since. Now, I am 19 and I still plan on reading any book he publishes. I can still remember the day I bought it at my school's Scholastic book fair. *sigh* those were the days... This book has been on my to read shelf for quite some time. I never really had an excuse to not read it, but I always had books that looked more appeasing. I took even longer to read it recently and juggling over removing it from my to read shelf due to the reader audience I had perceived this book would try to reach. The Lightning Thief was fast, fun, and a great read. There was tons of Greek mythology in this book. Some I've heard of, and others not so much. So I feel like there was a small educational element to this book as well.

When twelve year old trouble maker Percy Jackson finds out that he is a half-blood(child born to a mortal and god) of one of the most powerful Gods on Mount Olympus everything that he thought he knows about life changes. And if that isn't enough, someone is trying to frame him fo The Lightning Thief was fast, fun, and a great read. There was tons of Greek mythology in this book. Some I've heard of, and others not so much. So I feel like there was a small educational element to this book as well.

When twelve year old trouble maker Percy Jackson finds out that he is a half-blood(child born to a mortal and god) of one of the most powerful Gods on Mount Olympus everything that he thought he knows about life changes. And if that isn't enough, someone is trying to frame him for stealing from Zeus. Throughout the book you follow Percy and his friends as he attempts to clear his name and save those that are dearest to him.

The plot moved at a steady pace. There was a different Greek myth waiting for him at every turn, and it was fun to watch him and his companions try and get out of trouble.

Percy is really mature for his age. When I was twelve I was just coming out of my powerpuff girls faze.Percy, on the other hand, is battling monsters, and dealing with life and death. He has expectations the size of Mount Olympus thrown on him and he handles it remarkably well. Other than that though, he is like any other preteen boy.

Annabelle is another half-blood who helps Percy with his quest. She is the brains of the operation. She pretty much knows all of the myths, and her knowledge is helpful in saving them countless of times. I liked Annabelle well enough, and I really felt for her with her family troubles.

I think I liked Grover the best. He did hapless side kick really well. Grover's a satyr that is supposed to be a protector to Percy. Although more often than not it's Percy protecting Grover. But Grover holds his own, and more than makes up with it in his bumbling way.

Overall, I think that I would recommend this book to anybody with a love for Greek Mythology. This is especially a great book for kids, and think they would really love the world that's created. However, that doesn't mean that adults won't enjoy this as well. There was a lot of action, and a small amount of mystery. Enough to keep anybody interested. ...more

Rozpoczyna się podróż ze wschodu na zachód kontynentu amerykańskiego, z przystankami w Nowym Jorku, St.Louis, Denver, Las Vegas, Santa Monica aż do Los Angeles.

Ale dlaczego współczesny Olimp znalazł się akurat w Stanach Zjednoczonych ? Wyjaśnia to całkiem przekonująco autor ukazując sposób w jakim przemieszczał się mityczny dwór, co okazuje się stanowić ciekawy szlak architektoniczny po Europie i świecie.

"Ale prawdziwy świat jest tam, gdzie są potwory. Dopiero tam przekonujesz się, ile jesteś wart."
Wstęp do serii o losach współczesnych herosów i Olimpu to świetne odświeżenie z mitologii greckiej, pełne dopracowanych i kreatywnych rozwiązań.

Tak jak zazwyczaj bohaterowie kończą swą przygodę przed wakacjami, a wznawiają ja z początkiem szkoły, tak Obóz Herosów ożywa na czas letnich wakacji, a z normalnością potomkowie półkrwi borykają się w zwyczajnych szkołach dla śmiertelników.

Kiedyś, przed premierą ekranizacji pierwszej części, robiłam już podejście do tej serii. Najwyraźniej na daną lekturę musi być też odpowiedni czas. Teraz opowieść odbierałam o wiele lepiej niż wtedy. Myślałam, że ta książka nie będzie już dla mnie - że jest to bardziej literatura młodzieżowa. Ale nadnaturalność nie jest zbyt magiczna czy mitologiczna i łatwo stapia się ze zjawiskami rzeczywistości.

Co może w tej serii cenić sobie czytelnik dorosły ?
- Poczucie humoru, jak najbardziej nie jest dziecięce czy kojarzone z książkami dla dzieci.
- Nawiązania do mitologii greckiej i ich kreatywne przedstawienie we współczesności.
- Historia jest dobrze przemyślana i to widać.
- Choć bohaterowie mają lat około dwanaście, zachowują się o wiele odpowiedzialnej niż na ten wiek przystało. Są to herosi, a tacy otrzymują wyzwania jak sprzed tysięcy lat.

Wysłańcy, w postaci satyrów, wyszukują półbogów w świecie śmiertelników... tak samo jeden z nich odnalazł Łucję w Narnii ;) Takie skojarzenie ze światem po drugiej stronie starej szafy, ponieważ w tym także przypadku za każdym razem czeka się sporo na kolejną część ekranizacji - oba cykle przecież niesamowite i godne adaptacji filmowych.

After many years on my tbr shelve I have finally read The Lightning Thief. I really enjoyed this book. Ever page was action packed and very entertaining. Surprisingly I didn't feel disconnected with characters because of their age. As an adult I still found it relatable. I can see myself respond to situations the same way Percy did. I read these books when I was younger, and I can still remember how awesome they were! Percy Jackson and the Olympians is what started my Greek Mythology obsession, and Rick Riordan is an incredible writer. These books were ones of the first books that fueled by growing passion for reading, and are definitely a must read!
