I'm going to be honest and say I was a bit underwhelmed.

“I can feel the irrationality and anxiety draining my store of energy like a battery-operated racecar grinding away in the corner. This is the energy I will need to get through the next day. But I just lie in bed and watch it burn, and with it any hope for a productive tomorrow. There go the dishes, there goes the grocery store, there goes exercise, there goes bringing in the garbage cans. There goes basic human kindness.”

Go with the audio!!🎧 it's acted by Kathleen Wilhoite. You'll notice I said acted, not just read. She even sings and it is beautiful!!😊💕
Ok. On to the book. This is a wonderfully written story about a family that lives in Seattle. She is facing the "PTA Moms" of the backbiting variety. One of them spreads lies about her while another does even worse. Yes, kids, the mean girls never stop. And they breed.
Anyway, Bernadette is an artist who isn't using it. I am a firm believer that everyone posses ...more

I did love the story of Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple but personally had problems following the format. Bernadette is a Mom who is seen through her daughter's eyes as told through a variety of sources such as emails between her so-called friends and her Mom, personal accounts from herself and Dad, and different stories. Cute story, fun ending. ...more

Second time read:
I read it again as it was chosen in our bookclub and was very surprised that I did not remember almost anything from the story. I find it again engaging and funny although it's focused a little bit around mental illness. I guess that was the intention of the author, to show the comic part of some serious matters. I laughted so hard when Bernadette was explaining what Seattle is like. I reconsidered my rating and giving 3.5 stars now!
