DNF-ing so far. Too late, this one: some bridges cannot be crossed more than once.

I need to stop anticipating books, y'all. Every time I do, it isn't good.

First off, this book took me a week to read. For one I was THIS excited for, I was expecting less time. It was so. hard. to finish this book. This was my face the entire book:

I felt like I was reading a book about a character who happens to have the same name as President Snow, but wasn't the same person. Snow in this book is a silly, lovesick puppy dog compared to the ruthless, analytical villain we all know and love.

I put off reading this for a while bc I had no interest in making Snow a sympathetic character. But since the movie is coming out soon and my teen patrons have been talking about it more, I decided to give it a shot. It did a good job of explaining the backstory of the Games and how Snow became the character we know in the original trilogy. It was fun and fast, and it made me want to watch the movies again.

Ok so I'm running a little behind on my Hunger Games novels as you can see. I do recall, when this first came out, though, the uproar that Suzanne Collins was writing a book centering Snow as the hero. As I was reading this, not once did I think he was a "hero." She was VERY deliberate in making Snow the most cowardly, selfish weasel I have ever met.

In this installment, we are in the 10th iteration of the Hunger Games, and it's a far cry from the extravaganza of the later versions. It takes pla

2.5 I feel like I’m being harsh but I just didn’t love it.
It’s a prequel so it explores a bit the backstory on President Snow as a young man coming of age and it explores a bit what it is that makes a villain. I appreciated the nuanced look into antihero vs villain and the road it takes.
It also expanded the HG world, which was great for my nostalgia purposes, but wanted more on this personally.
I found the beginning interesting but slowly lost interest throughout unfortunately.
