Well, this is a story of a girl. What else is new? Everything!
For once, she just happens to be an assassin. Not in a butch unkempt way (that would send princes and knights running... away) but in a girly-girl way, with lots of ruffles, and bodices and cushy things and passion for all the knickknacks. A refreshing approach, I must say. We've got more than our share of girls that kick butt for lunch, kick it for breakfast... Yawnfest. This one makes time for everything!

So this was difficult to rate. I kind of had to force myself to keep on reading most of the time, and it was really obvious this was a debut novel. But it is also not the worst of books.
The narrative was weak, no much happened in the story, and Sarah J. Maas brushed off important things like most of the competition - which honestly felt like lazyness to me. The writing was kind of weird, inconsistent, and filled with unnecessary exclamation points (it might seem like nitpicking, but that makes m ...more

9/29/20 Definitely lost its luster reading it a second time. I know book 3 is where the series changes, but I found myself annoyed with the childish antics of Chaol, Dorian, and Celaena. Clearly Maas' writing evolves as Calaena's character does. Still enjoyable but probably closer to 3.5 stars.
9/24/2015: BIG NEWS ToG FANS!! This series has been optioned for television by the Mark Gordon company (aka the geniuses behind Grey's Anatomy, my favorite show ever!)

Celaena Sardothien is an assassin, living out a life sentence in the prison of Endovier. When the crown prince, Dorian, and his friend and Captain of the King's Guard, Chaol, pluck her out so she can partake in a contest to become the King's champion, she accepts. If she wins, after 4 years of service, she will earn her freedom.
I always love a tough girl and Celaena is no exception. She's strong, fierce and smart, but has a girly side to her which is a nice surprise. The story itself is sort of ...more

Full review on Stellar Kitten Book Reviews:
The writing was flawless in Throne of Glass, and the story went along at a very nice pace. There was just a perfect balance among the moments where we peered into the characters to see how they really were/felt, the competition challenges, the potential romance, and the mystery of what was going on in the castle.

"You could rattle the stars. You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.."
Second time reading this book and I loved it as much as the first time. It was fully entertaining and the characters are just so enjoyable to read about. The first time I read this, I loved Chaol Westfall with every fiber of my being and even until now (considering all the spoilers I've read for the latter books in the series) I still can't help but adore his ban ...more

This being the second time I have read this book, and I continuously fall more in love with the series. Action. Romance. Plot twists. Suspense. Celaena is badass and just what I'd expect of an 18 year old assassin. Sarah J Maas does not disappoint. Her novels all entwine together, the perfect author of a series. ...more

2018: My first reread of ToG was amazing! SJM does a marvelous job setting up the entire series through these characters, legends, and dreams. She is just brilliant! There were so many things I missed during my first go because I was so eager to find out what was next in the plot! All of the details make her books extraordinary and rereadable! Onward to Crown of Midnight and the count down to Kingdom of Ash!!!
2017: What a great start to a series!!

Thoroughly enjoyable! I am intrigued to see where the story goes next. I loved the characters and world building in this first installment. The main character certainly has my attention. I already care about her safety and can't wait to read the final outcome.
This was a great first book. I feel like I have a general understanding of the world and a brief grasp on its history. In addition, I am severely attached to many of the characters and want to know more.
