There was something about these first two books that really got to me. I LOVED them! The characters, the world, the way the author writes. EVERYTHING was just like inhaling the air I need to breathe!

I was so happy that this book starts right from where the first book ends. So picking it up wasn't bothersome to figure out where everyone is at that point and what might have happened "You’re the girl who razed Blackcliff and liberated Kauf. Laia of Serra. There was something about these first two books that really got to me. I LOVED them! The characters, the world, the way the author writes. EVERYTHING was just like inhaling the air I need to breathe!

I was so happy that this book starts right from where the first book ends. So picking it up wasn't bothersome to figure out where everyone is at that point and what might have happened in the meantime. It was a little easier to get into this book for this reason. I wasn't thrown into a bunch of backstory and information, just action.

Elias. Elias. Elias. Where do I start with this fine man...? I am in LOVE with Elias Veturius. Just go ahead and consider me single for the rest of my days because I dont think that they make em like Elias in the real world!!! Hes brave, and tough, and strong, and intimidating, and tall, and handsome, and and and...!!! AHHH! not to mention that he apparently has the biggest heart as well. I love that he always thought through things before he ever made any rash decisions. HE did not kill without remorse or without knowing that its his only choice. He didn't run off blind in rage or malice. He was always so careful to try and make the right decision even if it was the difficult one. Even when he didn't have the strength to go on, he still found a way.

Laia is another great character. I honestly felt so much for so many characters in these books. Laia is your typical girl who grows so much over the span of these two books that you almost feel like she is a different person that she is in the beginning. She thought she was weak and worthless but when push comes to shove, she really proves to be so much more. She also has a good heart and wants to be there for those she loves and protect them and save them. Her brother starts this fire within her when he is kidnapped in the first book and it drives her to become a leader and a kickass heroine who will stop at nothing to save him and those she has joined along the way. With the help of so many great people who see her passion and determination she inspires them to make differences and rise up against all the wrong that is happening in this wicked empire.

Helene. My best friend. Although in this book we really feel so sorry for poor Helene and all the crap thats been thrown her way, she is always so strong. She grows immensely in this book as well. When told that she is supposed to kill Elias she really struggles with who she wants to be loyal to and how far she is willing to go in order to hold on to that loyalty. I really respect her and all the difficult tasks shes been faced with how in the end she still seems to be able to be compassionate and understanding. She wants to be good, and to love, and to have the respect she deserves but it is a long and treacherous path to get there. I really feel like the next book will be a big one for Helene.

I also had a lot of respect for the author for the way she writes and how her plots aren't at all what you would think they would be. Marcus becoming Emperor blew my mind at the end of book one. I like that Elias didn't win and become this powerful almighty Emperor. There is evil and corruption among the empire and are good guys are fighting so hard to keep it from crumbling. Every twist and turn in the story really throws you for another loop and keeps you wondering what could possibly happen next! And trust me, its not at all what you would expect.

I need book three ASAP! I have so many questions and so many hopes for these characters. Pick these books up and read them now if you haven't already. You won't regret it.

All right kids, sit back and relax cause I got some things I need to get off my chest

Now, while this book may have taken me weeks to finish, it was in no way due to it being terrible. Because despite peeking at the end and seeing something I did not enjoy, sorry guys I had a moment of weakness, I kept on, AND WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. There are authors out there who love to play with your emotions, who love to case great hatred and love some characters and Sabaa Tahir is definitely one of them.

I really enjoyed this sequel. It was powerfully and beautifully written. I enjoyed going through what these characters felt and being there with them through it all. It was touching and it was also very painful to watch!

Reread: June 2018.
I know this sounds cliche, but I really did enjoy this more than the first time I read it.
I can’t believe it’s been two whole years since this book was out, so I’m glad I decided to reread it; I realised I’ve forgotten a lot of major plot points.
Now onto the 5-day + 18-hour + 50-minute wait for REAPER!
(Yes, I’m counting down till the midnight before release day in my time zone)

First read: September 2016
I am emotionally destroyed.

Well the adventure continues with Elias, Laia and Hel trying to navigate the world they now find themselves in, wrought with battle, betrayal, and unexpected alliances. Much of what I loved in the first book is still here--the action, surprises, danger and sexual tension. Hel comes in as a third narrator, and this time, I had to check the chapter headings to see who was speaking. Three just felt like a bit too much to juggle.

Still really love the audiobooks for this series. Fantastic, definitely give them a try. I loved the book, although I wasn't the biggest fan of Helene and Hannah. I enjoyed that we got to see more magic playing into the story. Full review to come!
