What Members Thought

I adore this book. There is a very good reason why this is the best-selling book in the Religion and Philosophy room of Powells Books in Portland (the world's largest independent bookstore); it is the most accessible, human, funny, and compelling "religious book" I've ever read (and I've read many). It is much less like a personal spirituality manual than it is a book of quirky essays by someone who happens to be deeply spiritual and learned, through the ups and downs of his life, how his faith

This was a book I couldn't put down; yet it took me awhile to get through it because I re-read some parts over and over. Don Miller seems to write without pretense, without care for putting readers off with any surprising revelations. This is a book I'll read again, and I'll probably get a different message. I loved this book (LOVED) because it was sincere, honest, candid. Miller relays the idea that no matter how much you can screw up, no matter how many times you can try to hide from God, God

Miller hijacked Holden Caulfield's voice, except that he made it even more self-absorbed, and Christian. In the beginning, I was okay with that, but by the end, I was cringing. Even more telling, toward the end he brings up The Catcher in the Rye, and what an important book it is to him. Yup, I pretty much guessed that, but thanks for the confirmation. He romanticizes his ideas and his penchant for aloneness, and he is vain in general. The points of interest in this book don't actually come from

If you consider yourself to be a conservative evangelical in America today, this book will challenge many of your core beliefs. Donald Miller reaches deep into his life experience to discuss his love, pain, enjoyment and struggles with the Christian faith. At times you'll think he's one of the brilliant minds in Christianity and at others you'll wonder if he's on the verge of losing his mind. In all cases, it'll make you examine yourself in light of modern Christianity and ask some serious quest

Overall, this was an excellent book on Christian spirituality in a modern world. It address topics that are important for anyone seeking a closer relationship with Christ. The only time where the writing kind of goes downhill is when Miller deals with his romance life. It becomes more about him than about Christian spirituality. This took up three chapters, but the book is still worthwhile, and it challenged me personally on many occasions.

I really enjoyed this book! Donald Miller writes this book in such a fun way you find it very easy to read. His struggles with spirituality are very personal and to me sounded real and human.http://www.goodreads.com/images/close...
