I very much enjoyed Hong Kong's historical backdrop and changing political culture. This surprised me, because I usually find such reflections bore me silly. Having these subjects introduced to me through the effect on personal lives made it more interesting.
Still, I could little relate to any of the characters. And often wondered why it was titled The Piano Teacher. She meant no more to the book than The School Girl, The Servant, The Businessman's Wife, etc.

I don't actually "own" it - I snagged it from the borrowing shelf at the Palacio Clubhouse (thanks Laura) and I have to bring it back when I am done.

I would have preferred more history and fewer affairs. When the author describes life in war time Hong Kong, I was interested. When it started off on the various character's love lives, I got bored. The title character is not the most important one and her changes over time aren't believable.
