I'm a fan of mystery novels, although I often find myself less than happy with the subgenre this corresponds to, the so-called "cozy mystery." Several things though lift this above the usual book on the mystery aisle. The style is simple, even spare, and the structure rather loose, but Smith's detective, Precious Ramotswe, is charming and clever--a worthy successor to the detectives that she mentions as her inspiration more than once, those of Agatha Christie. Like Christie's Miss Marple, she's I'm a fan of mystery novels, although I often find myself less than happy with the subgenre this corresponds to, the so-called "cozy mystery." Several things though lift this above the usual book on the mystery aisle. The style is simple, even spare, and the structure rather loose, but Smith's detective, Precious Ramotswe, is charming and clever--a worthy successor to the detectives that she mentions as her inspiration more than once, those of Agatha Christie. Like Christie's Miss Marple, she's a shrewd observer of the people and society around her and she has an ability to deftly navigate the different cultures and social levels in her community. There's also a good sense of the setting, from cultural to natural of Botswana, Africa, where Mma Ramotswe has set up her agency.

This isn't structured like the traditional mystery novel. It begins with Mma Ramotswe on a case, then the next chapter is the first person story of her father, then successive chapters over the next few dozen pages tells of her life before she starts the agency. And that part is not all fluff--it includes the story of her brief and abusive marriage. Most of the rest of the novel is episodic, dealing with various cases, although there is one overreaching mystery she solves in the end.

I can't rate this up there with the best of Agatha Christie, Josephine Tey, and Dorothy Sayers. It can't boast a literary style, incredible twists, nor did it evoke deep emotion. But I do rate it well above the usual mystery fare. This reminded me a bit of Maisie Dobbs, in that it concerned a woman in a traditionally male-dominated culture opening a detective agency. Except I greatly preferred Ramotswe over Dobbs. I think Ramotswe is both more likable and more plausible a creation and Smith the stronger writer. This was a quick read--it took me around three hours, and I enjoyed the entire journey. Precious Ramotswe adalah satu-satunya detektif wanita di Botswana. Sebelum meninggal, Obed Ramtoswe nanya sama anak satu-satunya itu, mau buka usaha apa, Mma Ramotswa malah bilang dia mau jadi detektif, ayahnya kaget tapi gak pernah mendapat jawaban alasan kenapa Mma Ramotswa mau buka kantor detektif dan dia membawa rasa penasaran itu sampai meninggal.

Beberapa temannya, seperti pengacaranya juga cenderung heran atas pilihan usaha Mma Ramots Precious Ramotswe adalah satu-satunya detektif wanita di Botswana. Apalagi di Afrika Selatan lagi ramai-ramainya isu gender, di mana wanita biasanya hanya mengerjakan pekerjaan rumahan, tapi sekarang mulai ada yang berpolitik. Kaum pria ada yang gak suka dengan perkembangan ini. Tapi, toh Mma Ramotswe maju terus pantang mundur.

Jangan dibayangin kasus-kasusnya Mma Ramotswe seperti kasus-kasus dalam Agatha Christie yang ribet dan perlu mempekerjakan ‘sel-sel kelabu’. Kasusnya Mma Ramotswe adalah masalah yang simple aja, misalnya suami yang tiba-tiba menghilang, kasus suami yang selingkuh, seorang perempuan yang minta menyelidiki laki-laki yang ngaku jadi bapaknya, seorang bapak yang minta Mma Ramotswa mengawasi apakah anak gadisnya punya pacar atau gak. Yang lebih serius juga ada, misalnya waktu Mma Ramotswe diminta membantu rumah sakit Bostwana untuk menyelidik salah satu dokternya yang dicurigai memakai obat-obat terlarang.

Cara Mma Ramotswe menyelesaikan kasusnya juga simple aja, gak selalu dengan mengendap-endap, tapi malah ngajak ngobrol si target. Mma Ramotswe bisa dibilang wanita yang funky, supel dan ramah, tapi juga tegas. Dan satu yang lucu, waktu kasus istri yang pengen tau suaminya selingkuh apa nggak, Mma Ramotswe harus datang ke sebuah bar dan jadi sedikit menggoda. Sampai akhirnya si suami yang ternyata emang genit itu berhasil diajak Mma Ramotswe datang ke Zebra Drive, rumah Mma Ramotswe, dan Mma Ramotswe mengambil foto waktu dia dan lelaki itu lagi mesra-mesra sebagai bukti ke istrinya. Tapi, gak disangka-sangka, malah Mma Ramotswe yang dibilang sebagai wanita penggoda suami orang sama si istri yang kalap.

Kehidupan social dan percintaan Mma Ramotswe juga sesekali dibahas di sini. Mma Ramotswe punya teman pria, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, pemilik sebuah bengkel ‘Tlokweng Road Speedy’. Mr. J.L.B Matekoni ini suka sama Mma Ramotswe dan sampai 2 kali melamar Mma Ramotswe untuk jadi istrinya. Tapi, Mma Ramotswe sempat menolak karena pernah gagal waktu berumah tangga dengan seorang pemain terompet, Note Mokoti. Mma Ramotswe juga suka ngopi di café di President Hotel atau jalan-jalan ke Book Centre.

Selain itu, meskipun bertubuh gemuk, Mma Ramotswe gak lupa sama penampilannya. Waktu dia lagi jalan-jalan dan mampir ke sebuah toko, dan kebetulan menjual baju dengan size yang besar, gak tanggung-tanggung, Mma Ramotswe sampai beli 3 baju dengan model yang sama – if you were the owner of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency you had to keep up a certain sytle (page. 216).

Buku ini gak njelimet, gak akan deh ketemu kasus yang menegangkan, dan gak seperti buku detektif lainnya. Di buku pertama dari The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series ini, kita diajak mengenal siapa Mma Ramotswe, dan menelusuri riwayat Mma Ramotswe dari lahir sampai bagaimana dia membuka kantor detektif yang diawali dengan rasa pesimis atas bisnis yang gak biasa ini. Buku ini ada humornya, tapi ada juga filosofinya.

I learned a lot about Botswana from reading this book! Alexander McCall Smith is excellent at character sketching.
The mysteries were clever as well. I can't wait to read more by this author! ...more
