After finishing Louise Penny's How the Light Gets In I couldn't wait to read how Armand Gamache would cope with his new stage in life as a retired person. Well, did I ever find out about it! And about so much more... This story takes the reader deep into the world of fine arts and especially that of the mind of painters. That in itself and the dramas that evolve around them keeps you hooked on the story. Aditionally, I have been totally fascinated by Penny's visceral depiction of the Quebec land ...more

I love Louise Penny's writing style and her Armand Gamache character - a good, good man, who solves mysteries with keen perception and insightful precision. The man has an unmatched heart and an unsurpassed moral compass -- I wish I could meet him in person! The novel features Gamache in retirement living in Three Pines, the village with its interesting, close-knit community and unique individuals. Still recovering from the aftermath of the intense drama, trauma and emotional and mental scars of ...more

Gamache has retired and now he and his wife are living in Three Pines hoping for a quiet and peaceful life. Oh, but it's not to be. Clara's estranged husband has gone missing, and knowing that Gamache cannot pass up a puzzle put to him, asks for his help.

This mystery was a departure from the typical Inspector Gamache mysteries. Peter Morrow has gone missing and his estranged wife wants to find him. This journey will take Gamache, Beauvoir, Clara, and Myrna travel to a wild and remote part of Qu

Meh. This one was disappointing. It may have been a long way home, but it seemed like a very long way until the end of the book. Louise Penny rarely disappoints, but this time I felt like I was slogging through it to get to the finish line. The best part was more of Ruth (and Rosa).

If I have any advice for readers of this series- it's read the books in order. I have read the series in anachronistic bits as I was able to get books from my library, and it has done a disservice to the wonderful arc of the series.

Now I know why Peter isn't in the latest books. How sad.

LP is always outstanding, but this felt very like a transitional book. I felt it was a quiet rumination on her personal life, with Michael standing in for Peter in some ways. That said, I like her husband Michael very much, but I loathe Peter.

She's got to be commended for continuing to write prolifically during such an intense time in her life.
