Some of the books and movies I love pull back the veil and reveal me to be a hopeless romantic, and this is going to be one of them. I sat and read this cover to cover without a break, except for when the emotions got too intense and I flipped over to check my e-mail. The entire book, set during both world wars, is written in letters. During the first world war, the letters are between a female poet living on the Isle of Skye and a slightly younger male fan of her work. The second world war lett

A story that unfolds entirely through letters, Letters from Skye is a simple, yet touching novel that spans both world wars – I and II. In the years leading up to World War I, Elspeth Dunn, a poet on the isle of Skye receives a letter from across the pond from American fan, David Graham. So begins a poet/fan relationship through the art of letter writing that over the months and World War I years transitions into a deeper one, one in which Elspeth and David get to know each other through the wri

I was a bit disappointed with this one, and wanted to enjoy it more than I did, so 2.5 stars rounded up to 3. Overall I found it to be a bit too sentimental. On the plus side, the story was successfully told via correspondence. It's not a unique device, but one that I tend to enjoy. On the downside, I found the language to be lacking in authenticity - a stretch for the 1940s letters, but rather implausible for the 1910s. I also questioned the brevity of the some of the letters. Would you really

Since this book tells the stories of 2 women, one during WWI and the other during WWII (more or less), I have averaged the rating between the 2 stories. Well, mostly it's about one's love story, and the other one finding out about it.

I was really looking forward to reading this book but was a bit disappointed. It was an easy light read but the entire book is written as letters and was set in two time periods and sometimes I found myself confused when it switched between the time periods. I found this style of writing was not the most enjoyable although the story was good and the characters were interesting.

I don't know why, but I have a thing about epistolary novels and also with novels set on islands. Put them both together, you have Letters from Skye and I am instantly sold on reading the book. This was good, not great, but very satisfying.

I had mixed feelings on this one. While the letters between poet Elspeth on the Isle of Skye and young American David Graham were at times poignant, sweet, amusing, I confess I felt sorry for her husband Iain.
