I had a review copy of this book for months last year and now I'm kicking myself for never getting into it. At the same time, it fits perfectly into my month of reading books from and about New Guinea, so the bookish universe must have known I needed to wait.
I've read several novels about anthropologists - some I loved, like Mating by Norman Rush, and some I liked slightly less but still enjoyed, like State of Wonder by Ann Patchett.

Oh this book. I think I loved it. I’m not sure yet. Euphoria is the story of 3 cultural anthropologists attempting to research and understand primitive tribes in the jungles of Papua New Guinea [then, Dutch New Guinea]. I read this book while living only a few islands away from this story’s setting, which gave the book more of an element of realism. I loved reading about the different tribes they lived with. I did love this book, but I am having trouble giving it 5 stars. I finished listening to Euphoria just a few hours ago, and maybe I should wait longer to write a review as often a story will linger for a while in my mind and I find that it has affected me more deeply than I had perceived at first.
So, what I loved: the beautiful language, the almost palpable sensuality, the encounter of like minds and their intellectual connection.
