Daniel James Brown's writing is reminiscent of Laura Hillenbrand, and if you have read either of her books you know that is saying a lot. Mr. Brown has written the story of nine young men who came of age during the depths of the Depression and against all odds achieved one of the greatest athletic feats of the twentieth century.

The Boys in the Boat is the story of the 1936 Olympic nine-man rowing team from Washington state, who defied the odds and took home the gold medal, besting Hitler's German rowing team, and the world champion English team.
This book read very much like Laura Hillenbrand's books Seabiscuit or Unbroken, although it didn't quite make it Hillenbrand's high level, in my opinion.

I heard this was a good book, but with my total lack of interest in things sporting, I really had my doubts about "it" and "me." Was I in for a big surprise!

I love these kinds of books. You know, the history of one thing or event that then gives me a new view on everything that was happening around it.
