Content warning: this book celebrates Cecil Rhodes, without critical reflection.

I fear I must now DNF this at page 215. It is just not getting any better. As such, the premise is to my liking: a mature English gentleman (aged 68, and this is great for fulfilling my mission to read many books with protagonists over 60), a genteel lady shopkeeper with family from Pakistan, a seaside town, a village. Finished reading Major Pettigrew for the second time (this time for book club). Just goes to show, how much timing influences one's preferences. Fun, funny story about the adventures of a last vestige of the British colonial/country world as he makes his way around the modern world. He is wise but humble, and his BS detector is never idle. Not heavy but sometimes deep.

This is a comfort read with very well drawn characters. It was a nice break between serious books without being total fluff. I would love a sequel.

I've heard this was good, and I guess it is, if good means heartwarming and predictable. A retired British army major, finding love rekindled with a shop owner while combating the selfish grown son and a community that is in danger of losing its identity, and everything changes one night... you get the picture. That's why it only gets three stars, there just isn't really anything new.

Underneath the story is an astonishing racis
