The founding of the colony of New Zealand is the focus of this book -- a group of young women from different backgrounds come onto the same ship -- a rich heiress, a governess, a set of young orphans who are going to be indentured servants in the fledgeling colony. This book follows them through nearly 30 years. I can tell it's set up for a sequel, which has been written but not translated into English yet.

This book was read for my 2016 Reading Challenge Around the World in 80 Books
Confession, I only bought this book because it was on sale and I didn’t have another to read for New Zealand. So I ignored the nay-sayers of GoodReads and took the $1.99 plunge. And you know what? In the Land of the Long White Cloud by Sarah Lark actually exceeded my expectations! It’s a historical fiction, with lots of romance, but also lots about a time & culture I didn’t know much about. In short, this book tried to include several generations of women in New Zealand in 600 books. Besides the main characters Helen and Gwyn, there's other girls that arrive in New Zealand with them which are recurring characters throughout the book. The story of two women who emigrate to New Zealand in the 1850s, Helen, an English governess, who answers an advert to become a mail-order bride and Gwyneira, daughter of a Welsh sheep baron who loses her in a game of poker to a New Zealand land owner to marry his son. I enjoyed the characters and the setting but the writing is weak in points with much convenient drama.
